The first assignment I chose to reflect on from this course is, not ironically, our first assignment! For this assignment, we were asked to create mock ups of student assignments that would assess student learning on each of the seven ISTE standards. I am including this assignment because I truly believe this helped me comprehend what technology integration should be used for. I’ll be honest, despite our school district being one-to-one with Chromebooks, I had not paid any attention to the ISTE standards. I had heard about them in passing, but quite frankly, could not even name one. By being asked to delve into the student standards and then think critically about how to implement these standards into the classroom, I now feel more equipped to go back to school and help students make progress toward these standards. I am including links to each of the seven assignments I created below:
Here is also a link to the ISTE standards that I referenced for this assignment:
So, what challenges did I encounter in creating these artifacts? Well, the first was that I simply needed to understand the standards themselves. I did some reading on the ISTE website. I also read through the teacher standards to try and understand how the two sets of standards connect. The most difficult of the standards to come up with an assignment for was the global collaborator. While the assignment I created does assess this standard, it does take a great amount of planning to implement. I did hear from our class about a global read aloud project, which also sounds enticing. While this assignment was to create seven separate assignments, I think for actual use in the classroom, I would try and tie in as many standards as possible to each assignment. I learned from this assignment that many of these standards go together and they are all equally as important. I would like to try and build these skills together, not in isolation.
